Denn was hätte ich sonst tun sollen?
“Ja! Ich hatte gerade entbunden!”
Lily erschrak in seinen Armen.
Ich senkte sofort meine Stimme.
“Es tut mir leid, Baby.”
Ethan wiegte sie sanft.
Neither of us spoke for several seconds.
Finally he said, “I came home because I forgot the site folder.”
I blinked.
“What?”
“This morning.”
He looked toward the garage.
“I got halfway to work and realized I’d left a folder in my office.”
That was it.
Something as ordinary as a forgotten folder had changed everything.
“If you hadn’t forgotten it…”
My voice disappeared.
We both looked at the nursery camera.
My stomach turned.
If Ethan had not forgotten the folder, Patricia would have had hours.
She could have decided what my “episode” looked like.
She could have added bruises.
She could have moved Lily.
She could have called Ethan herself.
Maybe the police.
Maybe an ambulance.
The possibilities made me cold.
Ethan’s face went gray.
“I know.”
I hugged my arms around myself.
“No. We don’t know.”
That was worse.
We would never know how far she planned to go.
That evening, after Lily finally fell asleep, Ethan and I watched the recording together.
I didn’t want to.
Then I decided I needed to.
Patricia had spent days making me question my own reactions.
I needed to see what had actually happened.
The video began with me feeding Lily.
I looked terrible.
My hair was tangled.
My shoulders sagged.
But I also looked peaceful.
That surprised me.
I had remembered myself as frantic.
Unstable.
Patricia had made me remember it that way.
On the screen, I stroked Lily’s back.
I smiled down at her.
I kissed her head.
Then Patricia entered.
We watched the entire conversation.
Give her to me.
She just fell asleep.
I said give her to me.
You’re becoming possessive.
She’s my daughter.
For now.
Hearing that line again made Ethan sit forward.
“What did she mean?”
“I don’t know.”
I did know, in a way.
It meant Patricia believed motherhood could be revoked if she judged me unworthy.
Maybe not legally.
Maybe she had no concrete plan.
But emotionally?
In her mind, Lily belonged to the family first.
To me second.
If at all.
The recording continued.
You don’t deserve this baby.
Ethan stopped the video.
His hands shook.
“She said that.”
“Yes.”
“To you.”
“Yes.”
He stared at the frozen image of his mother.
“I’m sorry.”
I didn’t answer.
He pressed play again.
We watched her grab me.
Watching yourself be assaulted is strange.
I remembered pain.
Fear.
Confusion.
But on video, something else was obvious.
The difference in our bodies.
Patricia was fully dressed, steady, upright.
I was hunched.
Slow.
Every movement careful because my body was still healing.
When she pulled me, I barely resisted.
I couldn’t.
My anger disappeared.
